Forepoles for Tunnelling and Underground Support | Casagrande

Forepoles

Pre-support system used in tunnelling to stabilise the ground ahead of the excavation face in weak or unstable formations.
Overview

Overview

Forepoling is a pre-support technique widely used in tunnelling and underground excavation to stabilise the ground ahead of the tunnel face. The method consists of installing a series of steel pipes, bars or spiles at a shallow angle above the excavation profile, creating a protective canopy that supports the surrounding ground during excavation.

These elements are installed before the advance of the tunnel face and form a structural arch that distributes loads and reduces the risk of ground collapse. The system is particularly effective in weak, fractured or loose ground conditions where conventional excavation support methods may not be sufficient.

Forepoling systems are frequently combined with shotcrete, rock bolts and other reinforcement techniques to create a comprehensive ground support strategy during tunnel construction.

Typical applications include:

  • Tunnelling in weak or heterogeneous ground
  • Portal stabilisation in tunnel entrances
  • Urban tunnelling with limited ground stability
  • Sequential excavation method (NATM)
  • Underground infrastructure projects

How it works?

1

Machine positioning and drilling start

The drilling unit is positioned at the tunnel face and aligned with the designed inclination of the forepoles.
2

Borehole drilling

A series of holes are drilled ahead of the tunnel crown following the designed canopy geometry.
3

Installation of forepoles

Steel pipes or bars are inserted into the drilled holes to create the pre-support canopy above the excavation.
4

Grouting or fixation

The forepoles may be grouted to improve bonding with the surrounding ground and enhance structural stability.
5

Tunnel advance under protection

Excavation proceeds beneath the canopy, which temporarily supports the ground until permanent tunnel lining is installed.

Advantages

  • ✓ Effective pre-support solution for weak or unstable ground
  • ✓ Improves safety during tunnel excavation
  • ✓ Compatible with NATM and sequential excavation methods
  • ✓ Flexible design adaptable to different tunnel geometries
  • ✓ Can be combined with other support systems

Limitations

  • ⚠ Requires accurate drilling and installation alignment
  • ⚠ Installation may slow down excavation cycles
  • ⚠ Limited effectiveness in extremely loose or highly permeable soils without additional treatment
  • ⚠ Requires careful design to ensure canopy continuity
  • ⚠ Additional material and installation costs compared to standard excavation support methods
