Cased CFA

Continuous Flight Auger piles installed with temporary casing for enhanced borehole stability in challenging soils.
Overview

Overview

Cased CFA piles combine the productivity of Continuous Flight Auger technology with the additional stability provided by temporary casing systems. This solution is particularly suitable for unstable, water-bearing or highly collapsible soils where conventional CFA piling may not guarantee adequate borehole integrity.

The technology allows drilling with a continuous auger while simultaneously supporting the upper portion of the borehole using casing. Concrete is then pumped through the hollow stem during auger extraction, ensuring continuous shaft formation under controlled pressure.

Depending on geological conditions and project requirements, Cased CFA piles can be executed:

  • In unstable granular soils
  • In water-bearing formations
  • In urban areas with strict vibration limits
  • With full-length or partial casing support

Cased CFA technology provides improved safety and reliability in difficult ground conditions while maintaining high productivity and low environmental impact.

How it works?

1

Machine positioning and casing setup

The piling rig is positioned and equipped with a continuous auger and temporary casing system.
2

Simultaneous drilling and casing advancement

The auger penetrates the ground while the casing supports the upper borehole section, preventing collapse.
3

Reaching design depth

Drilling continues to the required depth under controlled torque and crowd force.
4

Concrete injection during extraction

Concrete is pumped through the hollow stem while the auger is extracted, forming the pile shaft. The casing is progressively withdrawn as concreting proceeds.
5

Reinforcement installation (if required)

A reinforcement cage or central bar is inserted into the fresh concrete to ensure structural capacity.

Advantages

  • ✓ Increased borehole stability in unstable or water-bearing soils
  • ✓ High productivity compared to traditional cased bored piles
  • ✓ Low vibration and reduced noise
  • ✓ Suitable for dense urban environments
  • ✓ Improved control of pile geometry in difficult ground

Limitations

  • ⚠ More complex setup compared to standard CFA
  • ⚠ Higher equipment requirements
  • ⚠ Depth may be limited depending on casing configuration
  • ⚠ Requires careful coordination between drilling and casing extraction
  • ⚠ Higher operational costs due to additional casing system management
