Ground Improvement for Geotechnical Applications | Casagrande

Ground improvement

Solutions to enhance soil properties and reduce settlement for safe, sustainable foundations.

Overview

Ground improvement techniques modify and strengthen in-situ soils so that foundations and embankments can be built on otherwise unsuitable ground.
Objectives include increasing bearing capacity, reducing settlement, improving drainage and permeability, remediating contaminated soils, and stabilising slopes.
These methods minimise spoil generation and can be applied in restricted sites with low vibration and limited environmental impact.

Available technologies

Cutter soil mixing

Cutter soil mixing uses horizontal cutter wheels to mix soil with binder slurry, forming continuous soil cement panels. The technique produces low vibration and is effective in almost any soil type, with typical depths of 25–35 m and the potential for deeper treatment.

Soil mixing

Soil mixing creates in situ “soilcrete” columns or panels by blending soil with cementitious binder using rotating tools. It increases strength, stiffness and impermeability and can treat contaminated or weak soils. Deep mixing reaches depths up to around 30 m and produces minimal spoil.

Stone columns

Stone columns are constructed by forming vertical inclusions of compacted aggregate within soft soils. They enhance strength and stiffness, reduce settlement and provide drainage paths. A non vibration method allows installation in sensitive environments with minimal disturbance and limited spoil.
