Driven Piles for Deep Foundation Construction | Casagrande

Driven piles

Prefabricated piles installed by hydraulic hammers or high frequency vibration for rapid foundations and improved bearing capacity.

Overview

Driven piles are preformed columns made from steel, concrete or timber that are forced into the ground using hydraulic hammers or vibratory systems.
Their installation displaces and compacts the surrounding soil, increasing friction and bearing capacity.
Because the piles are manufactured off site, quality control is high and installation is rapid.
Dynamic blow counts during hydraulic hammer driving provide real time feedback on soil resistance.
Driven piles are widely used for buildings, tanks, towers and bridges in a range of ground conditions.
Typical options include high frequency vibration and hydraulic hammer methods.

Available technologies

Sheet pile vibrating

High frequency vibratory hammers operate above 30 Hz (over 2 000 rpm) and use rotating eccentric weights to generate vertical vibrations. The vibrations liquefy the soil around the pile, reducing friction so that the pile penetrates quickly. These hammers have a small amplitude and variable eccentric moment; the vibrations damp rapidly, so disturbances to neighbouring structures are minimal. They perform best in loose, sandy or granular soils and are commonly used for driving sheet piles, H sections and casings.

Hydraulic hammer

Hydraulic hammers drive piles by delivering powerful vertical impact blows to the pile head through a hydraulic system. Each impact transfers energy to the pile, allowing it to penetrate dense soils and stiff ground formations. Hydraulic hammer technology ensures high driving energy and precise control of the impact force, making it suitable for deep foundations and large structural piles in demanding geotechnical conditions.
