Kelly Guided Hydraulic Grab

Kelly guided hydraulic grab system for high-precision diaphragm wall excavation in soft to hard soils.
Overview

Overview

Kelly Guided Hydraulic Grab technology is a highly efficient solution for diaphragm wall construction, designed to provide accurate excavation geometry and superior verticality control. The hydraulic grab is mechanically guided by the Kelly system mounted on the diaphragm wall rig, ensuring stable and precise excavation throughout the panel depth.

The excavation is performed under the support of stabilising slurry, typically bentonite or polymer, which maintains trench stability and prevents collapse of the excavation walls. The Kelly guidance system improves excavation accuracy, especially in deep panels and demanding ground conditions, while ensuring controlled grab movement during excavation cycles.

Kelly guided hydraulic grabs are widely used in complex civil engineering and infrastructure projects where high excavation precision and reduced deviation are required.

Typical applications include:

  • Deep basement and underground structures
  • Metro and underground transport systems
  • High-precision retaining walls
  • Urban deep excavations
  • Large infrastructure and foundation projects

How it works?

1

Machine positioning and trench start

The diaphragm wall rig positions the Kelly guided hydraulic grab at the excavation panel location and trench excavation begins under slurry support.
2

Guided excavation cycle

The grab is mechanically guided by the Kelly system while hydraulically opening and closing its jaws to excavate soil from the trench.
3

Slurry stabilisation

Bentonite or polymer slurry stabilises the trench walls and maintains excavation stability during all excavation phases.
4

Reinforcement cage installation

After reaching the design depth, the reinforcement cage is lowered into the excavated panel.
5

Concrete placement

Concrete is placed through tremie pipes, replacing the slurry and forming the reinforced diaphragm wall panel.
